The Debt Advice Team offers helpful tips to help boost peoples income, most of them you can do from your own home!

• Tax – Check to ensure that you are on the right tax band for both your salary and your council tax, many people do not realise that they could be paying for too much for their tax’s.

• Savings - Shop around for the best interest rates, many people leave their money sitting in an account with little interest being made. Check on comparison websites for the best deals.

• Rent a room scheme – if you have a spare room in your home and would like to gain extra cash, check out the rent a room scheme. In Ireland you can gain a gross of €10,000 annual rental income, which is also exempt from tax.

• Recycle your old mobile phones – Don’t just let them sit their collecting dust, send them in to websites offering this service. Its easy to do, request a freepost bag, place your mobile phone inside with your contact details, send in the post and wait for your cheque to arrive.

• Cash your gold – The rates of pay per gold are at the highest they’ve been in a long time, look for websites offering this service and see how much money you could gain, they usually offer a better exchange rate than that of pawn brokers.

• Bank Charges and PPI – Claim back your bank charges and miss-sold Payment Protection Insurance on your loan agreements, you could be paying out money for a policy that isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. Log on to www.ppi-claims.org.uk to find out more.

• Take a second job – Boost your income by taking on a second job, the advantage of working unsocial hours or nights is that they tend to pay more. Check in your local pub to see if they need extra bar staff, tips usually fairly good which makes up for a lower wage.

• Sell Your Junk – One persons junk is another persons treasure, it’s estimated that the average household has about €1,000 worth off unwanted junk. Register with ebay to start selling those unwanted items or check to see when your next local car boot sale is.
